MAC Fails Rocky Horror Picture Show

Okay, maybe fails is a strong word. “Generally does a passable job” is more appropriate. I know it seems that I love to pick on MAC, but I honestly expect a little better for MAC and in comparison to what they were releasing several years ago. I feel like they have been missing the mark as of late and the Rocky Horror Picture Show collection is kind of a letdown. Please keep in mind I’m looking at what’s being released, how it’s been sold, and from the view of a consumer. I’m not necessarily trying to discourage anyone from buying, these are just my thoughts. (All photos were taken from here.) Let’s dive in shall we?

There are three limited edition lip sticks, and one new permanent. There is Strange Journey (Yellowish brick red, matte) and I would have definitely preferred a bright rich red that is seen in the iconic logo. Maybe even a red pink blend of what’s on the packaging. Oblivion (Vivid, bluish red, amplified) and Sin (deep dark blue red, matte and the permanent) also seem to be siblings of Rihana’s line for MAC, or is that just me? They seem like colors that didn’t have to be grouped into this collection. Frank-n-Furter (deep raspberry wine, matte) is the only one I care about and it’s possibly because it reminds me of the Nightmoth lip pencil. Even with the Nightmoth similarity, it could have been a touch darker.  Vino is supposedly an “intense violet purple”, although didn’t we just talk about the dark side of the vine not being purple? I’m renaming it, “Deception”.

The eyeshadow palette is where the passable really hits home. I understand this palette works more with what make up was actually worn in the film, sure. But with make up lines, I think people want something that also captures the spirit of the thing. For example, MAC’s “Novel Romance” line was spot on. Probably one of my favorite lines they did, because it told a story. A dash of fairy tale, a spoonful of come hither, and a drop of innocence. From marketing to product, it lived up to the theme. I look at this palette and I’m like meh. (I rarely go meh. I’m either living for it or side eyeing it into the ground.) It seems like another Maleficent palette. Where is the sin? Where is the opportunity to become something larger than life? I guess what I’m saying is I would have preferred something that went more with the characters (you know…Magenta, Columbia, Riff Raff. I’m two seconds away from just creating my own version of this damn thing) and less with the actual make up. But I suppose it was mentioned somewhere that this was for like people who go the film nights and dress up as the characters. I’m still left wanting more though.

I like the glitter (Gold and 3D Black). The gold reminds me of Rocky and the 3D black reminds me of the Time Warp, surprised to see it wasn’t named that but that’s none of my business considering these are both permanents. The pigment, a sparkling burgandy, (It’s Not Easy Having a Good Time) is beautiful. I love reds like that. Is it in line with the theme? Yes.

From left to right, we shall go. The chromagraphic pencils in Black Black and Basic Red. I have nothing against them, red and black, RHPS, they’re besties, but it seems like these were thrown in here with the release more because they are new. It’s okay, I understand. But they couldn’t swing a naughty something in the names there somewhere? Am I really upset about the names of products? No. It’s more of the principle of the thing. You’re debuting permanent products in a limited edition collection, I don’t think it’s too much to ask that you sell the whole thing as opposed to individual parts. No one who has ever had the pleasure of knowing RHPS, has ever been mad when a reference is made to it while we’re not watching the movie. Time Warp, for example, may be the song played on constant repeat, but it also can be for sci-fi stuff and everyone has a sci fi thing they love, so it can…stand the test of time. Anyway, Grease paint sticks in B (bright yellow blue) and Black (intense black), are fine and in line. Eyeliner, On the Hunt, I’m not familiar with MAC’s liquid eyeliners, and I may try this one. This is a permanent so that’s nice. I’m not seeing anything about the mascara so unfortunately we’re going to skip it.

Powder blush in Crazed Imagination (muted plum with a hint of pink pearl). I love it. It’s that dark innocence pink that is the only pink blush that works on me. Strong possibility I will buy this. I like that it could also go with some doll looks I’ve been wanting to do.

Sculpt and Shape Powder in Bone Beige and Emphasize. I dig it. The looks from RHPS were on point, let’s not kid around. I think this product will definitely help people achieve that allure.

Right to left this time. The lashes I’m pretty sure are a permanent of MAC just being sold in theme packaging. I think a fuller lash would’ve worked well here, and a little more in the length department, but that might just be me. Nail polish. Bad Fairy (the red) is a limited edition and similar to the pigment. So, my approval stands. Formidable is a permanent and a gorgeous one at that. I love it. I really hope this is as pretty on my hand as it looks in the picture.

Overall? I don’t think you should hold your breath as this being the collection to end all collections. The timing, early fall, just before Halloween is nice. I think a couple of these products can work with holiday looks as well. Straight up how I feel? I feel like it was a casually flick of the wrist “Here we did a thing.” I’m not feeling it as much as I expected to. I feel this collection is going for the take something that is iconic and make it for those who don’t branch outside their comfort zones, and can use this as a stepping stone. But it makes MAC sound like MEH and for a company that is praised so heavily, I will hold them to their reputation. Harsh, I know, but with make up, if it doesn’t make you feel like the sex, why buy it?

For days when I’m talking about things I love, and the occasional suspicious glance of hmm, follow me on Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram and YouTube. New coffin boxes will be coming soon to The Dream Lounge, my Etsy shop, but there’s stock available now. Oh and don’t forget to join The Exploration Party.

Until next time,

Z.e.D.
